Goddess Amaterasu with raven: Be your own light (Mixed media oil painting)

The goddess Amaterasu is the sun goddess in Japanese mythology. There is a story in which she retreated into a cave, thereby hiding her light from the world as well. She could only be coaxed back out with the help of mirrors. To me, this is a beautiful symbol that still holds true today: do not hide your own inner light, neither from yourself nor from the world. And at the same time: you yourself are the light—you do not have to look for it outside of yourself.

I portrayed the goddess Amaterasu with partially anthracite-colored skin. These areas are intended to create a contrast to her otherwise radiant appearance – as is the raven as her companion animal. This is because it is metaphorically very much about the interplay of light and shadow.

In my series Essence, I portray well-known goddesses from various cultures and place them in a modern context: These symbols are timeless and remind you of what always is: Your true essence, your power. Unlike in my series Mythology in this series I also consciously abstract the goddess figures themselves a bit, by only rendering them partially realistically. This emphasizes their symbolic character and invites you to bring your own interpretation into the respective image.

The painting was created in multiple layers using collage, acrylic and oil paints, texture paste, and gold paint.
