The alchemy of habit and freedom

The alchemy of habit and freedom: get out of the cage

The power of habit can be incredibly strong. There are habits we take on in order to achieve a certain goal, and they can serve us well for a time.

For example, if you want to lose weight and adopt a new way of eating to do so, it might help you reach your goal for a while.

But perhaps your life circumstances change again, or your body no longer responds well to this diet, and you want to make a change. What if this habit has already become such a part of you that you’re afraid of losing something if you let it go?

Habits can restrict us—whether they were never good for us in the first place, or because we’ve outgrown them or our life goals have changed. Once a habit has become an established part of our lives, we sometimes don’t even realize that it is we ourselves who are limiting us by holding on to something that constrains us. We blame external circumstances or other people for these limitations in our lives.

We might feel like “victims” of circumstances or of our obligations and dependencies—without realizing that we could change them at any time. Like a bird who feels trapped and doesn’t even realize the cage door has already been opened...

If you have drawn this card, it is a sign for you to let go of the old version of yourself. The version that developed certain habits which are no longer serving them. Free yourself from everything that’s holding you back from stepping into your power, and create new, supportive habits that can accompany you to your next goal—until they too are eventually replaced by something new.
