Mixed Media Art with Storytelling in Acrylic and Oil

Mixed media worlds that inspire

I love creating entire worlds with mixed media – always as an expression of your true identity. Animals often serve as symbols of inner strength, sometimes together with humans.

My series each tell a self-contained story. Below you will find selected works that best showcase my current work. For a broader overview, feel free to visit my online portfolio – or Have your very own personalized image created especially for you or your business.

"Alchemy"

Collection: Shift (2026)

“Shift” refers to that brief moment when you suddenly pause and question whether you’re dreaming or if your current life is real. It’s a moment that can feel almost surreal, as if you’ve become a character in a film or a stage play.

At the same time, this moment holds immense potential: you are consciously faced with the choice of whether your life should continue exactly as it has so far, or whether you want to experience something completely different. The series opens up this space and shows that there are always more possibilities in life than we tend to believe. It’s about breaking structures and looking beneath the surface.

The series is inspired by the concept of “breaking the fourth wall.” To make this visible, I use many 3D elements such as texture paste and hot glue, which also create tactile layers on the canvas. Other stylistic devices include reflections, as well as playing with perspective and surreal elements.

Clouded Leopard Silent Messengers

Collection: Silent Messengers (2026)

Silent Messengers are animal species that are endangered or on the brink of extinction, yet deeply inspiring. With this series, I don’t want to evoke sadness, but to portray these animals in a powerful way and raise awareness for them. Our world is so beautiful—and it’s worth protecting.

At the same time, these animals are also a symbol of never giving up on yourself and discovering your own inner strength. Each animal represents a particular quality that you can recognize within yourself as well. I have blended each animal with its environment in a slightly different way to highlight how deeply they are connected to their natural habitat.

Collection: Limitless (2025)

Boundaries usually only arise in our heads when we tell ourselves what is not possible. But instead of continuing to work on "eliminating" these limits, in this series I would rather invite you to explore what is possible beyond inner limitations such as fears or doubts.

Discover a world in which you have broken free from fixed patterns and where everything is open and free! "Limitless" is inspired by the Art Deco style, which features many elegant and symmetrical patterns and is essentially about exploration and modern times. In some areas of the pictures I use familiar patterns from Art Deco, only to let them fade into the abstract in other places, which stands for "breaking out" of familiar patterns.

Collection: Spells (2025)

"Spells" is a collection of empowering phrases that I used to create one spell per painting. As I didn't want to simply write a sentence on the canvas, I created a symbol from each of the sentences (inspired by Sigils, magical signs). The symbol is accompanied by one or more animals and possibly a person that fit in thematically.

Visually, this series plays with contrasts between transparent, colorful figures and a mostly neutral, opaque background, some of which has been treated with textured paste.

Other artistic influences for this series come from tattoo design, as sigils are also often tattooed - as symbols of protection or strength for the respective wearer. So I have also created a tattoo design for some of the works.

The respective symbol is a sign of power and may inspire its new art collector every day. Only the buyer of the original painting will know the full phrase of the magic spell, as the phrase is written on the back of the canvas.

Collection: Alchemy (2024-25)

"Alchemy" unites opposites, such as contrasting states, seasons or symbols, each in one picture. Through the contrast, I want to give you the message: There is always more than just "black" OR "white". Everything exists side by side and it is always your choice what you focus on.

Turn pain into strength, hopelessness into confidence and excessive demands into clarity. The female figures and animals depicted in the picture remind you to become your own inner alchemist. You already have within you exactly what you need right now.

Collection: Mythology (2024-25)

"Mythology" revives old legends of gods and heroes and gives them a new lease of life. Because the myths are still alive today. In you, in us and in society.

I want to inspire you to find your own superpowers instead of just attributing them to the heroes and gods of the past. I combine the goddesses and heroines that I paint together with spirit animals with modern elements such as spray paint / graffiti style, collage and colorful ink to make them more tangible as symbols for people today.

The oil paints I use in my art also help to give the figures a lively character, which here and there almost looks as if they are coming out of the canvas and inviting you into their magical world.

Do you have questions about my mixed media original paintings?

Where's the difference between an original painting and an art print?

Some of my paintings are also available as art prints, where an image of the original painting is reproduced, for example on paper or canvas. Some prints have open editions and can be reproduced and purchased as often as desired, while others are limited editions, restricted to a small number of copies (this is indicated in the respective product description) and are often further refined by me by hand, for example with individually added gold highlights.

Art prints are a wonderful way to immerse yourself in my artistic world and get to know my work—especially if you don’t yet own any original art. I have to be honest: once someone experiences and appreciates original paintings, they usually don’t want to hang prints anymore.

Since I work with mixed media techniques, a variety of materials, and often many layers, art prints can only ever be an approximation of the original. Not all details can be represented in a print the way they appear in the original painting—whether it’s texture paste, which can only be printed flat, the vibrant oil colors that give the original its depth, or gold highlights that make the original reflect and glow, which the print cannot replicate. An original painting always radiates more than a print, as every brushstroke is visually and tangibly present, allowing you to get lost in it for hours.

How do I find the right mixed media original painting for myself?

An original painting and the decision to hang it in your home is a very personal matter. Naturally, the painting should appeal to you visually and also fit stylistically and color-wise into your space. But my art is much more than that: My collectors are often drawn not only to the visual aspect of a piece but also to the stories and meanings behind the artwork.

My recommendation is this: Start by looking at the titles and short descriptions of the series that thematically appeal to you the most. Then pay attention to which painting your eyes keep returning to. After that, feel free to read the individual titles and descriptions. You might even come up with your own personal associations with a particular piece that aren’t mentioned in the description—and that’s perfectly fine, because everyone naturally sees something different in each painting. Perhaps the animal or person depicted reminds you of something or someone from your own life.

I’m happy to support you if you’re unsure whether a painting you have your eye on will truly fit the spot in your home where you want to hang it. If you need additional photos of a painting or would like to send me a photo of the corner where you’d like to place it so I can advise you, feel free to reach out. You can also contact me if you’re looking for something specific: a painting in certain colors or on a particular theme. If that painting doesn’t yet exist in my collection—or if all works of that type are currently sold—you can also Your very own commissioned work designed to your specifications.

Is it possible to pay my new painting or commissioned works in installments?

Yes, in individual cases this is possible. However, the artwork will remain with me until the final payment has been made. Installment payments are currently not available through the shop, and an additional fee applies for this option. If you’d like to use this option, feel free to contact me directly—I can then make you a personalized offer for the piece you’re interested in.

Which styles and materials do you use in your paintings?

For each series, I establish a few “rules” before I start painting, focusing on a particular style and slightly limiting the materials I use. However, there are some components I always return to:

My approach to materials is “mixed media,” which means that I generally combine different media in every painting. I do this because I want to take advantage of the best qualities of each material: I start with a charcoal drawing and then build up layer by layer, from transparent to opaque.
In this process, I usually use collage techniques, acrylic ink, spray paints, markers, acrylic paints, and finally oil paints. Oil paints are now almost always included, as they bring an incredible vibrancy to the paintings that acrylics alone can only achieve to a limited extent. In some of my works, the proportion of oil paint is very high, while in others I use it only for the final layer to give the piece that special finishing touch. This varies somewhat from series to series.

Some paintings I deliberately start on a black ground and paint over it with lighter colors to create a very specific glow that the dark background gives to certain colors.

In terms of style, my foundation is abstract realism—meaning that parts of the painting are rendered realistically (usually the figures), while other areas (such as the background) are abstract. Because my painting style is very fast and expressive, this combination works best for me. I also occasionally draw inspiration from other styles and integrate small elements of them into my work, such as Art Deco, Surrealism, or tattoo design (Fineline).

Where's the difference between a painting on canvas and on paper? And in which formats do you paint?

The decision of whether a mixed media painting on canvas or on paper is right for you ultimately rests entirely with you. Sometimes you simply fall in love with a particular piece—and the medium becomes secondary.

I offer paintings on different media and in various formats: Mixed media works on canvas can be hung immediately and do not need framing. All canvas paintings are painted on the edges, and most come with a hanging wire on the back, allowing you to hang the piece professionally on a wall hook. My paintings are predominantly created on high-quality stretcher frames with wide edges. These canvases are not only of excellent quality, but the wide edges also give them a refined, elegant appearance.

Perhaps your taste leans more toward framed, flatter works? My paintings on paper (mostly in standard DIN formats) usually come unframed, as the frame is a matter of personal taste and should match your interior. In these cases, you purchase a frame individually and can frame and hang the piece as you wish. However, if you prefer a complete package with both artwork and frame, it is also possible for me, in consultation with you, to order a suitable frame and send you the finished framed piece (prices upon request). A frame naturally adds an elegant look to a piece—but it will always create some reflection, even if you choose an anti-reflective option when purchasing.

Personally, I feel that an unframed canvas painting invites the viewer in and “pulls” them into its world, whereas a framed paper artwork projects outward and reflects into the room.

The standard formats for my canvas mixed media paintings are (in cm): 50×50, 50×60, 50×70, 60×80, 60×90, 70×100, and 80×80 cm, with most works created in portrait orientation (though some are horizontal). For my paper works, I most commonly use DIN A2 and DIN A1 formats. If you commission a custom painting from me,you are, of course, welcome to choose other formats in consultation with me.

Is every painting unique? And what if my favorite painting is already sold?

Yes, every piece is unique—but for some, I produce art prints, which are clearly marked as prints and are therefore less valuable.

Every original painting comes with a certificate of authenticity, documenting the work and its value at the time of sale. This confirms the authenticity of the piece directly from me as the artist.

If your favorite work has already been sold, feel free to browse for others in a similar style—for example, from the same series, which shares the same basic theme. here you can explore a portfolio of all my works since 2024. If you’re looking for something specific (such as a particular animal or a painting in certain colors), don’t hesitate to contact me—I’ll help you find “your” painting.

I never paint the same motif twice, so it’s not possible to reproduce an identical work. However, you can commission a custom piece from me,which can be inspired by existing works. In such a commission, I can incorporate the elements you loved from your original favorite piece while also including your individual personal wishes.

Do I need a frame to hang my new painting? And how to hang it?

For my paintings on canvas, you don’t need an additional frame. The edges are either painted or printed (in the case of art prints), and the piece is ready to hang immediately. Works on paper, however, should be framed. Typically, I deliver my paper artworks unframed, as tastes vary and the frame should match your interior. If desired, I can, for an additional fee, order a suitable frame for the specific piece and deliver both together. Just contact me so we can find the best solution for you.

Canvas paintings, as well as (in exceptional cases) already framed paper works, are ready to hang right away. They come either with a picture hook or a hanging wire, allowing you to balance the artwork on your wall. For most pieces, a single nail in the wall is sufficient—only for larger works from 90 cm and up (especially in landscape or square formats) do I recommend using two nails for extra stability. Drilling a hole in the wall is not necessary.

If you choose to purchase your own frame to frame a canvas or paper artwork, please follow the instructions included with the frame, as it may require a different approach than the one I suggest.

Art prints of my originals

Some of my original paintings are also available as art prints on canvas or high-quality fine art paper. They are perfect if you’d like to get to know my art first. Your new print is produced immediately after your order and shipped directly to you from the printing studio.

From time to time, I also offer limited art prints in small editions, which I personally enhance by hand—for example by adding gold accents, signing the piece, and including a personal handwritten note. These editions are more exclusive than the open editions and also come with a certificate of authenticity.

Please note that because I work in a mixed media style and often use “3D effects” such as texture paste, collages, or reflective gold paints, a print can never fully capture the entirety of the original artwork. There will always be compromises in color, depth, and texture, and the print will differ from the original.

My mixed media art as colorful accents in your everyday life

Surround yourself with inspiring colors and symbols that reflect who you truly are. With my art on accessories, you bring beauty into your daily life and turn ordinary moments into something special.

There are accessories such as T-shirts and mugs printed with my mixed media art, as well as pieces I paint on by hand—like shoes and bags. You can choose whether you’d like an existing favorite artwork of mine to accompany you in your everyday life, or have your own unique piece of art painted onto your favorite accessory.

"I am always simply amazed by Sonja's creativity. I love her spirit animal pictures and everything else she creates with so much love. I find it particularly beautiful that Sonja also paints our pets so wonderfully, especially the deceased ones. She has also embellished my drums, as you can see here. The picture with the little gerbil is my Paulchen, which she painted for me based on a photo. Many of the motifs Sonja has painted are also available on mugs or as cushion covers. Always nice to give as a gift, I think. I haven't yet mentioned that I can highly recommend Sonja as a coach ;-) Here too, with her empathetic nature and her incredible awareness, she is simply a great contribution, for us humans and also for the animals."
